The following are simple steps you can take to ensure your tile lasts a lifetime.
Cleaning Your Tile
- First sweep or vacuum the surface to remove dust and debris.
- It is suggested that once per week, use a solution of neutral, multipurpose liquid spray and water to mop your tile.
- NOTE: The product chosen should also be grout-joint cleaning compatible. Your routine cleaner should never contain hazardous or polluting products, including but not limited ammonia or acid, ammonia can discolor grout and acid can damage and discolor both the grout and tile.
- Use a cotton mop, cloth, sponge or non-metallic brush with the cleaner.
- Rinse the entire area with clean water.
Cleaning Your Grout Joints
- First sweep or vacuum the surface to remove dust and debris.
- Concentrated household or commercial cleaners are suggested for regular cleaning. The product chosen should be grout-joint cleaning compatible and like tile cleaners, should never contain hazardous or polluting products, including but not limited to ammonia or acid.
When heavy-duty grout cleaning is required, you will need professional strength tile and grout cleaner. This can be purchased at most home centers and your local professional floor covering dealer.
NOTE: Neither grout sealants nor 100% epoxy grout will guarantee against the surface build-up or discoloration of the grout. Grout needs to be cleaned on a periodic basis to remove any surface build-up.
Maintaining Your Tile
- Tile is hard and will resist scratches, but it is also brittle and will crack under impact or heavy pressure. Do your best to avoid dropping heavy objects on your tile.
- Regular cleaning will prevent a build-up of dirt and debris which can increase the risk of your tile becoming permanently damaged.
- Porcelain comes in either glazed or full-body and if glazed tile is scratched deep enough, the white color of the tile will be revealed. Such damage cannot be repaired, instead it will need to be replaced.
- Cracked or broken tiles can usually be replaced with ease. It is important to keep a few spare tiles stored safely for when you may need to replace them.
